Hons/Me + Eds

Hons.. the one place both asians and white ppl go for good bbq meat, rice, wonton soup, etc. Some say it reminds them of HK, others just like it because it's cheap and fast, and I guess it's rather authentic.

I used to go when I was a child.. esp to the coquitlam one because it's close.. but then one time, I witnessed a man server yank a woman servers hair really hard because they were verbally fighting in front of all the customers. I was like. ten at that time. so it kinda scared me. Definitely something you do not want to see at a restaurant.

I had to go to coquitlam today so we stopped by Hons quickly before heading back.. we ordered a bbq pork+rice and wonton soup separately.. but then I looked at the menu and saw that together combo is only 7.49. Being asian cheapskate I am, obv I wanted this! so we tracked down our intial server by him walking to her, then another server came over so I told about it, but then there was confusion because both were told.. so we told a 3rd server and she fixed everything. haha phewf. Confusion just to save a few bucks.. but they were totally nice about it :) and I am glad we ordered the combo because I wasn't very hungry (the combos were smaller).

Everything was adequate . nothing to rave but nothing to be disgusted by. Definitely worth 7.49!!! so come here for a cheap eat!


Me and Eds is this new pizza joint in Abby. There's other locations in the lower mainland so I am guessing it is a semi successful franchise? We went today and it was quite empty when we got it.. there was a fly that kept flying around too.. soo annoying and gross. We ordered nachos and a small pizza. for nachos they cost 12.95 I think, and has no meat at all. We ordered it without onions/olive/jalapenos.. haha basicallyalmost everything! we also ordered a small pizza the Me & Ed's Combo with meats pepper and mushrooms I think.

The food came and the nachos was fricking gigantic. Omg it could have fed 6 people.. but nope, it was just 2 people.. oh god. There was nothing but tomatoes and cheese on it too.. We thought lettuce was included? anyways.. omg we were sooo full after, it was ok.. the chips were too hard for my liking. The pizza was pretty good.. very meaty with a thin crust.
but man! we were soooo full from the nachos we just had one slice each and took the rest home.

Two things- cost us 15 bucks each. and it was a small pizza.. I don't know if that's a good price. Doubtful I will be back.

Sagano Sushi

I think I have a new favorite sushi spot... and surprisingly it's in abby!

A new sushi place called Sagano Sushi just opened across from the mall so we decided to go. If I didn't know about it, I wouldn't even see it or realized it was there... There were barely any advertisement or eye catching signs anywhere. oi. Inside, was absolutely dead.. and no tables were filled during our time there! (6-7).

We ordered a couple rolls and a chirashi don and croquette.. They were having a promotion at the time, if you order 2 rolls, the 3rd one was for free :) We had a roll with yam tempura/unagi, salmon/avocado, and dessert (banana/avocado). The first two rolls were very very delicious.. and pretty! the dessert roll however was disgusting! banana on top was fine, but the banana tempura was soggy and gross as hell. The Avocado/cucumber inside did not even go with the banana. eww..

The Chirashi don had really fresh sashimi. The croquette was fried nicely.. I have absolutely no complaints.

Dinner cost 35 bucks. Wow! That is cheap! I definitely thought it would be more expensive but I guess with one free roll, our meal was very valuable. I wish they advertised their restaurant more. This is a hidden gem for sure. I loved everything we ordered and I will probably come back very soon to try more rolls and other dishes. If you're ever around Abby, definitely check this place out :)

Mars + Uva

Everytime I pass old abbotsford, I always see the Mars Japanese Bistro sign. It looks way cute so I decided to try here one day. I've personally never been to this mall even though it takes up at least 5 blocks of space.. but there used to be a way sketched out super valu and across from it was a park that everyone warns not to walk in alone.. yup that's abby for you.

Anyways, this sushi place is next to Sprott Shaw.. we got there around 11:30 and it was dead empty. We ordered the honey chicken teriyaki, pork cutlets+egg rice, and 3 sushi rolls: hawaiian, pear, and mango. There was one called Prawn and shrimp roll.. um the last time I checked, they were relatively the same thing.. Apparently one of them was tempura and the other wasn't.. interesting.

Anyways the food came, the rolls were tiny!! I was expecting some pretty big special sushi rolls, but nope. They were run of the mill rolled up sushi with fruit inside. There wasn't enough rice on them and they fell apart pretty easily.. eh.

The two rice dishes were o-k... nothing special. At 12:00, they became super busy.. but nonetheless, it was still just one waitress, one sushi man, and one cook. The sun was also blinding my eyes from inside (Some type of glare). My parents had the problem in Hakkasan but I just thought they were old..now I know what they mean.

School is over and to celebrate, me and my roomie decided to go downtown for wine and dessert. It was the ugliest day ever and the longest bus ride of my life.. but it was ok, I miss downtown. We went to Uva Wine Bar... it's smaller than I thought.. The seats are really low, when the service came over, she basically towered over us.. I didn't really make eye contact.. I had a glass of chardonnay that was quite refreshing. my friend at the woo woo geuwurtaminer (sp) that was too sweet.. I didn't know g.. were sweeter wines.. Anyways, we ordered the Chocolate nemesis river cafe without even bothering to ask her what it was. When it came, I wasn't too pleased because I don't like chocolate cake (weird I know) but upon having a taste, it was delicious. The texture was like chocolate, not cake. Excellent. The lemon foam thing on the other hand didn't really compliment it (in my opinion). It was weird.

Bavaria

Reminscing about my childhood days, I remember going to the Bavaria and eating steak and lobster. (to have one of these as a childhood memory was basically foreshadow that I would eventually take pictures and blog about food). The place was always so dim and old but their food was reasonably priced and delicious. I hadn't been back in about 10-12 years but I had a coupon so we decided to go here one night.
They renovated the whole place to look more trendy and upscale, even with the hobos sitting outside on their bench drinking.
The service was a little snooty seeing us two teenage girls as opposed to their regular older, you-can-tell-they-have-money type of customers. Nonetheless, we got seated prompty even amidst all the reserved sign on nearly all the tables. We were served a "goulash" with bread in the beginning. The 'goulash' tasted microwaved chunkys. ew.
We ordered a calamari dinner and baby back ribs.
The ribs were too tender (maybe to cater to their older older crowd which occupied many of the tables). and the calamari were nicely fried but the tzatiki was really bland.
As we were eating, we saw some teenager with a skateboard coming in and going to the kitchen. I didn't need to see that the 'chef' preparing my food tonight would be younger than me.

I don't think I'll be back, I would rather like to hold onto my old memories and look back on it instead of dabbing into them in the present. Don't change what's already good right ?

Wings+Japanese

I've always wanted to try Wings but never been motivated to go because I've always heard such bad things about this place. Things from bad wings to medicore food to dumb waitresses.. Besides, this place is a little out of my way (alllll the way down granville.) Abby recently opened a new wings so I thought this is an opportune time to try it out. I mean the restaurant selection here kinda sucks: regular chain restaurants, apparently a really bad spaghetti factory, bad brunch restaurant 62, either AYCE or mediocore or shittay japanese joints (more below), dragonfort (no making fun of that one there. we know them.), and ..what.. apple betty? gross.

So for drinks, we ordered gin and tonic and bellini. my gin and tonic was way too sweet and the bellini was so gross. It was made by mix, and it was really really awful. We ordered wings: westcoaster and louisana. The WC were way too lemony and the louisana were way too sweet. Lovely.

For dessert, the menus made them sound soooo good so we ordered two. They looked exactly alike! except that the hugs and kisses one had brownie layers between the cheesecake. oi.

The service was ok, but I would not come back to it again. I want to give Blustone another try.


Last week after my class 5 (which I got yay) me and my father went to ken japan bistro for quick lunch before I headed back to burnaby. When I say quick, I actually meant slow. to the point I got sooo frustrated but I didn't even know how to express it because there was only one waitress, she was already running around, and I don't want to express my anger at a young asian fob girl. My father said it's still her fault because she's just slow . period. he thinks she was doing unneccesary things or didn't know how to prioritize the workload. Like she would be doing back of the house things (filling up kettles but not using them yet, or giving orders but there were already lots of orders there) instead of tending to customers needs first. I don't know, she's just slow. honestly FUCK.

We had the tonkatsu (ken japon style apparently) dragon rolls and alaska rolls. The rolls were ok. a little expensive for 5 pieces. (around 7.95-9.95) and the tonkatsu was soo gross. even my father thought so. The breading also came right off when we picked it up. Not only this, but the pork was fried so long it was so hard and chewy. gross. I keep saying even my father thinks so because he's so easy going and never finds a problem with anything. I mean he does, but he is usually forgiving or understanding or thinks everything tastes fine. Unlike me, I am really picky and nothing usually "wows" me.. so when I say even my father thinks so, then it's prettyyy bad

Obv I am never going back. I want to try Mars bistro by old abby. It's a small place, but it could be good..?

mmm Breakfast

I went to restuarant 62 back in my hometown. The place was d-e-a-d. We were basically the only table there on sunday at 12-1pm. Even so, they had to sit us in a secluded far away spot. I had an omelette (my first time eating one) and my friend had a sandwich. The sandwich tasted like something I could eat at the cafe at school and my friend said it tasted like quiznos. My omlette looked like a pizza. It had a crust! The salad was disgusting, both caesar and mixed greens. Thank god the prices were below 15 or else I would feel ripped off. I had high hopes for this place because the chef used to work for Glowbal I think and another restuarant. But I was disappointed. The only upside were the salt and pepper shakers.. which my friend stole.. i wish I took one now.


I also baked some christmas cookies. I've never baked cookies from scratch before (I am more of a meal making person, not pastry..) It was a little hard, I think the recipe was a little off because I ended up kneading my cookie dough a lot and adding mass amounts of flour just to make sure the dough stayed together. that's already a warning sign. But I recently bought these heart cut outs from Daiso for 2 dollars and I was excited to use them!



Look at the pretty cakes from T&T! They looked better than they tasted though :(

So good yet so bad

The combo platter in Boston Pizza at Abbotsford. Too bad the potato chip things in the middle were spicy.. I couldn't eat those :(

Another combo platter at Moxies on Robson.. yumyum! although the avocado rolls were disgusting and the calamari were not fried long enough..
After that we were still hungy so we ordered this chicken pasta with garlic bread.. mmmm!
