Pinkys Steakhouse is located in Yaletown and on W 4th. I've been to Yaletown location twice and it's been pleasant..

The first time, we randomly stumbled upon the restaurant and went inside for appys and drinks. We were seated in these really comfty black chairs. We ordered a bottle of wine and two appys: coconut shrimps and calamari. Both were disgusting and the presentation was pretty ugly too.. But the ambience and our comfort won us over and we planned on coming back here one day for mains entrees.

The second time was for my father's birthday. This time we sat in a booth. Our waitress was super nice and attentive... even with my parent's really bad english, she was patient and understanding. My parents ordered the steaks and I just had an appetizer (wasn't very hungry and because I was paying). I had the garlic shrimps?.. they turned out to be REALLY garlicy. It was served with a shit load of garlic on top of my shrimps too.. euckk.. The steaks were ok. I think one of them was rather salty. They camewith pastas and onion rings.

She was really nice and decided to give us free ice creams. I don't like ice cream so it was an added bonus for my father. I haven't been back to Pinkys in a very long time.. but I wouldn't mind trying it out at Kitsilano :) I think the steaks here are affordable and adequate.. just steer clear of those disgusting appys.

A Kettle of Fish

Some loser decided to bribe me with a dinner to make him cupcakes so I said yes (:P). After accidentally crossing the bridge and ending up in kits, we managed to get to A Kettle of Fish. Walking in, there was a huge whiff of old people smell. Now I am not being mean or anything.. But you know that smell in your grandparents house that smells like antiques/medicine.. Well, it smelled like that.. And the place looked like antique roadshow. With a cage with fake chickens, old décors, grim colors (brown/red couches..ew), shit load of plants that I felt like I was eating in the forest and random ones like a poinsetta next to a cactus. Ya .. To put it delicately, I was not fond of the atmosphere/ambience.

The fried oysters were ordered and personally, they tasted really gross.. I am not a HUGE fan of oysters and inside was way too slimy for me. He liked it because anything deep fried will fulfill his fatty belly. The bread was pretty good- warm served with soft butter. Yum

I had the sablefish.. It was undercooked wayy too much. I understand that some restaurants like to serve it a little on the rare side but I am not a huge fan because I like my fish to flake. It wasn't bad though.

Then we had the Crème brulee and cheesecake. The cheesecake was pretty yummy but the crème brulee tasted burnt! It was really black already, and it had a bitter taste to it all. Gross. But thankfully, she deducted it off the bill, even though his hungry ass ate it all.

The food was o-k but honestly, the ambience scared me too much, maybe if I was 50, I might have enjoyed it. But sorry, I am still young and hip- i'll bust a move while listening to the cool kids (if you're ugly put your hands by your side, but if you're not then wave them in the sky :P) is my pastime.

Plan B

We were craving some dessert and wine on a Monday night so we decided to try out Plan B (since they had half off wine specials). I've been here once before and i thoroughly enjoyed everything and planned on coming again.. This time, I definitely do not have the same sentiments.

We arrive and the service was super nice and happy so we thought excellent this will be a good night. We sat down and ordered a bottle of riesling and a sablefish plate. The whole menu is designed so everything are "share plates". Sablefish for 15 bucks, we thought this will be a good (esp since it's a pain to cook fish in our apt b/c of bad ventilation :( ). we patiently waited for our food, drinking our delicious wine.. getting hungrier by the minute... Then she comes over and tells us she forgot to put the order in for the fish, and didn't realize until after she asked the kitchen where the fish was.. omg. The place wasn't busy and you forgot ONE order. I actually started getting hunger pains and felt weak (I hadn't eaten much the whole day). The sablefish comes and it's this dinky thing meant to be shared??? we each took 2 bites and it was done. The foam thing is just weird and the panna cotta/sablefish tasted off. Needless to say, we hated this and I was still starving.

So we ordered fries which came out MUCH faster. I did not like the seasoning on it, but I had to stuff my face because really bad hunger pains.

Lastly, we ordered the stilton cheesecake which was delicious but so freaking small. The rhubarb was super sour though. Towards the end of the night, we never saw her and she never came over to ask us how everything was. I couldn't even finish my wine because my stomach needed food, not alcohol. and I didn't feel like ordering another 15 dollar weird ass thing that would not fulfill my appetite.

I was still weak and had to get a burger from mcdonalds, that 4 dollar mcchicken was better than the whole 45 dollar meal combined.

No.. we are not coming back again.

Section (3) and Joeys

My friend from Victoria came out for an environmental conference, so we met up after to go to Section (3). I felt so bad because her feet were dying from heels and she didn't expect so much walking (from Westin Bayshore). oh well.

We shared a yam fries and prawn linguini. They were both not good. The yam fries reminded me of the ones I had at Hamilton Street Grill (which were the worst ones I've ever had). They were too dark on the outside and not soft enough inside. I don't know how to describe.

The linguini wasn't great. The prawns were over cooked and everything else was pretty plain.

The service was really nice though??

Then we went to joeys on burrard for dessert. We had the apple pie which was really good because I love apple pie :) It was good too because she found the apple pie to be too much so she ate the ice cream and i ate most of the pie :) yay. The ambience of joeys is really nice. I have yet to venture into the bathrooms of joeys (the one on broadway is freaking amazingg).

Friday

Today, we went to players chophouse for lunch. Inside, the place was really nice and spacey. We had the canadian pizza and seafood chowder. The bread came with the pizza at the same time. That was kinda gay because we were so hungry. The chowder tasted microwaved (my friend said, I didn't have it). the salad that came with it tasted weird. but the pizza wasn't that bad. I was sooo full after. The place is ..nice.. but it was a little uncomfortable. I don't know, it wasn't bad, it wasn't good. it was .. eh.


Then we went to Boulangerie la parisienne for raspberry cheesecake. I didn't like it. It was too moussy for me. The bottom is sponge cake which I don't like. The sandwiches didn't look very appealing either..

After we went to Yew for a drink. The place is beautiful. I love the high ceilings and open kitchens.I didn't feel like alcohol so I had this forget me not. Gross. The tea in the drink was horrible and my friend tried it as well. After we had a sip, we made a cringing face. It's not even like I m trying to, it's just the drink makes us make the face haha i don't know. She had a great long island iced tea which turned out to be 50 cents more than my gross non alcoholic drink. fuck.
I think I'll be back for food one day

all in all i spent 15 dollars yay :)

Restuarants

Today, we went to Tequila Kitchen, we had a salsa flight. I didn't really like it that much, I would love to come back and try the other dishes. The service kinda sucked.. It was nonexistant for us.

Then we went on over to Amarcord and shared a gnocchi.. it's my first time eating it, It's ok. The waitors were nice. They thought we were visiting because I took pictures of my food haha.. The outside looks so tacky but inside is nice

Next we went to Doux Crepes for a peanut butter and condensed milk crepe. Dang it was really good for 5 bucks!! I wanna try the peking duck one day haha

Finally we went to simply thai. We shared a rice platter, that was soo much better than damn anything at Urban Thai. Although the service here was also nonexistant. ugh what the hell

We lied on the beach for an hour and headed on over to raincity grill for a dessert. We shared the pain perdu (grilled pear) and I think it was too sweet for my liking. I tried to look for Indica again and I can't find the bloody place. wat the hell

Coast

I am not a huge fan of the glowbal corporation but I don't mind Coast.. I've been to Coast before for teasers and crab cakes. They were pretty good.

This time, we shared a mussels and fries, the bread was yummy and the mussels were good. i really did not like the fries, they weren't soft enough inside. Then my friends came so we all got desserts. We had practically EVERYTHING. The banana cake was o-k. but too sweet for me. The brownie was yummy. The caramel was gross (I don't like caramel) and the rice pudding was a let down unfortunately. The s'mores cheesecake didn't work (the marshmallow didn't really go with the cheesecake part) but my highlight was the peanut butter bar. Wow. it was delicious.



The service was ok. Sometimes it came off a little cocky/uncomfortable.. I don't know. I am not yearning to come back but if I was starving and nowhere else was open/desired.. I wouldn't mind this place. I do like their concept of small desserts though

Friday Dining

I really did try to stay for my whole lecture today but it was just impossible. it didn't help that there was a continuous flow of people dispersing from the classroom silently every 5 minutes. Hence we were early for our reservation at the Hart House. Nonetheless, I was too hungry to sit around aimlessly for half an hour (I only had a banana). aka repeat of Hamilton St Grill and PlanB waiting around on benches.
The place was nice but inside was kind of eerie. I think it was the old house thing .. anyways, they gave us the wrong menu.. I had my heart set on eggs benny but settled for quiche instead. The food took awhile. When it came, my quiche was stone cold. I 've never had quiches before so I made up excuses thinking maybe it's a cold quiche. But it was like ICE COLD. so I sent it back, he was really nice about it. The bad thing about me is I don't like sending food back unless I HAVE to. I am always scared something will happen. Anyways, it came back and it was hot. but there was a hair in my food. gah. We had to go do marketing experiment so I didn't want to send food back AGAIN. I just ate the fries. My friend had the risotto and had no complaints.
After the experiment, we went downtown to Ganache Patisserie. I've heard about this place but I've never walked past it before. I had a vague memory of the address so we decided on some aimless walking and hopefully luck out and hit it. We did :) The place is really cute with affordable cakes. We ordered the Guava mousse and passion et chocolat. They were really good at first bites, but then they got a little too sweet for me.
Next, I wanted to try out Tequila Kitchen because I still had my mexican craving going on.. but we passed Urban Thai bistro and decided to give them one more try since we had a coupon as well. (went there for dessert once). We ordered the Pad thai and Peanut Sauce Chicken. They were both way too heavy on Sauce. This was my first time eating pad thai so I had no comparisons but my friend said it wasn't very authentic.. To me, it tasted like I was eating spaghetti because of the noodles and the sauce tasted like it. The chicken was COVERED with peanut sauce. It's not a good thing. The flavor was so overpowering I had to drink water every time I took a bite (and I am not a huge water drinker at restaurants). We ate a couple bites and then packed it to go. needless to say, this was not worth it and I won't be back.
Should have gone to Tequila Kitchen or even Sala Thai... hum.

Hamilton Street Grill

I've always heard good things about Hamilton street grill but after my lunch here, I beg to differ. I ordered a Caprese Sandwich and my friend ordered Mussels and frites. The place was pretty dead but we waited quite a while for our food. Mine comes out and my yam fries are like.. burnt. wtf. I didn't say anything, and the waitress served it to me as if it was supposed to be like this. So I tried one, and it wasn't crispy or fries tasting.. it tasted funny.. so I ended up not eating any of it. My friend's fries were super salty. she said her mussels were fine, but then again, how hard is it to make mussels? my sandwich wasn't very good, I got it wrapped and my waitor doesn't even comment on my whole plate of yam fries to ask me if anything was wrong. He was practically nonexistant the entire time we were there. Then he proceeds to give me this huge ass brown bag for my small half sandwich. wt.fuck I guess I should have been smarter and have said something. But the way they served it/acted made me feel like they *were* supposed to be like this. Like some sort of alder wooden grilled yam fries or some shit.


Honestly, I hate this place. I am never coming back.

I love this weather

The last two days have been great. Today is really nice too, although I wish it was raining because I am stuck writing two papers :(

On Friday me and my friend went to Insadong. It was pretty good. The meat was nice and non fattening. We were a little confused at what Bulgolgi was but it was pretty good haha. I would love to come back. Although afterwards, I felt SUPER sluggish because I haven't ate meat (except a piece of deli meat a day) for a week and my body used so much energy to break it down. aiya. That night I went to Wild Garlic for a 4.00 double martini. Holy. Fuck. I swear to god mine was pure vodka. I am not even kidding. I tasted absolutely no pineapple juice or like a very small hint of it. The rest I felt like I was taking shots. I don't like hard alcohol anymore so that martini was pure hell.

Yesterday we headed downtown. We went to the Boathouse by English bay first. I thought it was brunch but it was lunch...hum.. The service was minimal, even when I dropped my napkin.. a waitress walked past without even bothering picking it up for me .wtf. I remember at lift when I dropped a knife, and my waitor was far away and he came over, got on his hands and knees, went underneath my chair, to get my knife and get me a new one. Anyways, we ordered these chicken drummettes to share. This other table came later than us and they got their food before us! They ordered burgers .. then we got our food, and guess what, 2 of the drumsticks were RAW inside. what the hellll. I didn't bother complaining because I didn't feel like sitting there for another hour waiting for our food. Not only that, but the food was weird. Chili spiced drumsticks with sour cream to dip . The Sour cream was just a weird dip for the chicken.. I just wanted to get out of there. This was a crappy start to my day.
We headed to Bayside lounge next because my friend told me it was pretty good. I've been to Soho before on the left, and the service there was minimal (I miss pacific crab company :( ) Anyways, Bayside looked really tacky and.. weird.. so we sat for 5 min and got up and left. I felt bad but the waitress smiled and said it was fine. i think she just wanted to talk to her friend over serving others. Which I didn't mind
We headed to Central because we were SUPER hungry. it was 1pm and we had ate nothing besides the crappy ass drumsticks, the unraw ones which was about 3 each. The place had friendly service and it was cute inside. I ordered the breakfast and um.. it's ok. nothing special, something I could make at home. She ordered the soup and she found it really good.
Then we went to tan on English Bay which was really nice. I need a tan, a real one because fake ones look BAD on me.. Afterwards, we walked along the seawall all the way to Yaletown. We went to PlanB. The interior is pretty nice and the music isn't deftly loud and crazy. We had this crazy idea of eating there for 2 hours because of another reservation at Brix after.. We were gonna eat super slowllyy. but as slowly as I eat, I cannot prolong dinner for 2 hours. We also had long island iced teas and water we were SOO thirsty from the whole day.
Anyways, we ordered the mussels (which I realized I don't like that much) and lobster risotto. I don't kno, I think it was the horseradish.. because I was super turned off by this dish..
After, we sat by the seawall again for awhile and then went to Brix. This place is So cute! I love it so much, I am definitely coming back again. I was a little embarassed with what we ordered and such. My plan was actaully to order very little food at PlanB and order more at Brix, but it fell through after we got super full from PlanB. We ended up sharing a salmon crepe and milk chocolate cheesecake. The crepe was disgusting in my opinion. I think I realized I don't like savory crepes. The salmon reminded me of.. tuna salad and I thought it was going to be salmon fillets. haha i don't know. The Cheesecake was really good, tasted like milk chocolate.

Ok, today I am not eating anything except tofu and bread, mainly because we have nothing left in our fridge and we are too poor to grocery shop. Tomorrow I am going to Pinkys for my dad's birthday. Then I think I am not going to eat out for awhile.. maybe just friday.. aiya.

La Terrazza etc

My latest dining experiences have not been super.. This is so disheartening..
After a lousy presentation, me and my friend decided to get some good food downtown to make up for it. We went to Bardot first, after standing at the door for 15 minutes, we just left. There was NO service to be seen AT ALL. what the fuck. I have never witnessed that before. it's also sad (for me) because this is the 3rd time I've went to this place wanting to try it (first time they were closed for nye, second time my friend wasn't impressed with the menu, 3rd time waited for 15 min) but yet I still want to try... hah. Anyways, after that we ended up at La Terrazza.. It was so expensive we decided to eat appetizers. I pointed mine out to him (crab cakes) because I couldn't read it. He said oh Portabello? I didn't really listen to him and said yes..
So I got this. When I got it I thought i twas just creatively made but still crab cakes. I bit into it and it was disgusting. I couldn't even finish it.
The bill came.. it cost the same as..
are you fucking shitting me. You're telling me my fucking disgusting ass MUSHROOM stuffed into spring roll form is the same as this seafood stew!! WTF. He charged me for the crab cakes. which Obviously I did not eat.
Unfortunately, I did not realize all this until I went home.
I guess stupidity is also at fault here.

Oh well I got crab cakes at Sip another day. They were ok. This was the first time I actually got food at Sip. The restaurant is nice and the concept is cool.. I don't mind this place, they have the best background to take a picture with (haha) and their bartender looks like jared leto apparently, who is hot (I've heard this from a couple people) . I also prefer this place much more than whineo's next door (loud and dark)

Food in Yaletown

I love Yaletown. I am gonna live there once I can afford it.

Went to Coast Restaurant.. The service was great but the food was just o-k. Had the crab cakes, scallops, and spring rolls..


Another day, we went to Blue Water Cafe and the food was soooo good. We had the halibut (cellphone picture). It was so delicious. We also had dynamite rolls (I've had better) and cheesecake. The drink was weak unfortunately.

Before going to Plush one night, we went to Glowbal (which is affiliated with Coast). The service was top notch once again but the food was not. We had the tasting platter for two. None of it was good. Everything was disgusting. ugh.

If anyone ever goes to Moxies. This is THE best dessert EVER. omg. It's called banana caramel xango? It's deep fried banana with ice cream and caramel/chocolate sauce or something like that. It is so good. It's the only reason why I go back to Moxies now (and the ginger pear magarita).

Me and my friend also went to Gastown and tried out Salt Tasting Room. The location is such a turn off. You would never find it if you never knew it was in an alleyway. no not some historical attention grabbing alleyway. It was literally an alley way. Inside, the room is nice and the service was very friendly. We chose our own cheese condiments and meat. It is here that I found my fondness for sparkling wine. mm.
It's definitely not a place to go on an empty stomach. We stopped at Jule's Bistro next.. unfortunately they were closed between lunch and dinner. ugh. so we stopped at Flux Bistro.. We were scared to go in because it was aboslutely dead inside. Then again, we DID go at 3:30pm. who the hell eats at that time. Thinking that they might be closed like Jule's, we scoped outside for 5 minutes before we asked someone who was going inside (a worker). probably thought we were the stupidest people ever. We just had a salad and fries. More wine of course.
